Tolkien Gateway - Legolas’ History.

A properly written history will go here once my finger heals.

Character Personality:

Like all elves, Legolas possesses a love of nature and life, of the stars, that other races seem to lack or don’t feel in the same way that he does. In ‘The Hobbit,’ the elves are seen celebrating and singing and dancing in the forest. This is a trait that most elves in Mirkwood share and from Legolas’ display throughout the books, it seems that he’s no different. He even breaks out in song throughout the books, tells storys and generally tries to act cheerful and lighthearted! Growing up in Spiderwood, it’s no surprise. Gotta have fun sometime!

“ ‘Farewell!’ He said to Gandalf. ‘I go to find the Sun!’ ”

He still holds a childlike wonder of all things, finding joy in even simple things and yet, despite this, he’ll still treat those younger than him as children at times. He’s basically that person that is always happy, even in the morning when everyone else can’t even bear to be awake. It’s a wonder that he never gets on the nerves of his companions. Or that they don’t voice it if they are annoyed.

Most people believe that Legolas and his father, King Thranduil, have a poor relationship. This is so wrong and let me tell you why. In elvish culture, children are the greatest joys in their life. They cherish their children and raise them well. Even the worst of the elves had loyal and loving children. They’re never mistreated because they’re so important to elves. Legolas is no exception to this. Thranduil sent Legolas to the speak with Elrond of the escape of Gollum.

“ "[Elves] had few children, but these were very dear to them. Their families...were held together by love and a deep feeling for kinship in mind and body; and the children needed little governing or teaching." ”

This alone displays the fact that Legolas is incredibly trustworthy. If he wasn’t, he’d have never been sent. He was trusted to act as Thranduil’s emissary and to know what to say, do and how to behave. No one was there to guide him so even though he acts young and childish at times, he knows when it’s time to be serious and behaves properly.

Alongside that is the fact that he was chosen/volunteered to be a member of the Fellowship of the Ring. This shows that he’s loyal, very much so, but also that he’s brave and dedicated. This quest held the fate of all Middle Earth and the people there. While he could abandon the quest at any time, he didn’t. He stayed a part of it even after the Fellowship broke apart. And after the breaking of the Fellowship, he remained with Aragorn and Gimli, the latter of which he had formed a strong friendship with. And that was something unheard of among elves at the time, where most still had a grudge against/distrusted dwarves.

He is defensive of his friends, threatening Eomer when the Man threatened Gimli. Legolas reacted solely to protect Gimli rather than being sensible and speaking in his defense. It shows how close he holds his friends and how strongly he feels about them. As if that’s not enough, after the War of the Ring, shortly after King Elessar’s death, Legolas built a ship to sail West and took Gimli with him. The only dwarf to ever be permitted to do so.

Despite this though, Legolas and Gimli have a friendly competition during it all and try to outdo one another in killing the most enemies. Perhaps anything can be made into a competition between them, with how good a pair of friends they became by the end of their journey. Legolas had planned, after all, to take Gimli with him when he sailed to the West. The only dwarf to ever be permitted.

Legolas is also humble, giving his opinion and giving the choice to another all in the same sentence much of the time. He’ll put the well-being and desires of the rest of the Fellowship before his own desires. He’ll say it in a way that’s very reminiscent of Frodo’s comment: “it is said do not ask the elves for counsel for they will say both yes and no...”

This is gathered from the book alone though. Let’s move on to Tower of Animus.

In the beginning, he remained optimistic and cheerful, hopeful that they could return home and that everything they were told by the administrators was a lie. It took more than six months for the tower to really begin to affect him and that was the TYL even which led Legolas to believe that more than one thousand years had passed since he first came to the tower.

During that event, he became incredibly distrusting of strangers and protective of those that had close CR with him. Basically, if you even looked at Zelda, Taiki, Haldir or someone equally close to in the wrong way than you were on his list of people not to trust. He wouldn’t have had a problem with killing someone to protect them. His fighting style became more ruthless, quicker, moves that would result in a quick death to his opponent. And he’d abandoned the use of a bow by that time as well, only using it if he had to hunt.

So if that wasn’t enough, the brainwashing event happened and Legolas became more prone to violence and believed that the administrators were his masters and that he had always been a retrieval unit for them. He was also physically deformed. After her was turned back to normal, Legolas spent a great deal of time simply being angry and training more diligently. He was of the mindset that if he couldn’t resist Jason’s brainwashing than he was weak. And how could he help someone if he was so easily subdued as he had been? So came on the coping strategy of reminding himself that everything could get worse and that there were others that had suffered much worse at Jason’s hands during the brainwashing.

He’s steadily started to recover with Zelda entrusting him with knowledge about Pandora and the rebellion, even involving him in the ‘Chip Chip Revolution’ where they had to place chips (left by Dax for Zelda) on each floor. He’s still lacking confidence in himself and he’s less inclined to believe or trust people. He’s simply misplaced his trust enough times in the tower that he’d rather be cautious.

As he and Gimli were preparing to sail across the Sea to Valinor, tragedy struck and all of Arda was destroyed. By some twisted sense of luck, Legolas was the one rescued and brought to the Tower of Animus where he awoke with a collar of green fluid around his neck. There he met people from other worlds, befriended them and learned about what happened there. Including the fact that people could die and would reawaken the next morning. This, of course, he didn’t believe until he made the mistake of pissing off Ganondorf Dragmire. Ten days after their unfortunate meeting, Legolas came upon the floor that he was having a meeting of villains and was stabbed through the chest, left to bleed out and die on the floor in front of them all.

He woke the next morning without any sign of injury. As though it had been a nightmare, if he hadn’t remembered the feeling of being killed. It wasn’t until June of 2012 that Legolas would suffer again, this time at the hands of the Administrators and with several other groups of people. This was Infighting.

Infighting was, simply, the way the administrators would learn who was the best among them and decide who would be in charge for the month of July. This ‘game’ of theirs introduced Ruana. Legolas was assigned to Dax’s pod, the most humane of the administrators.

Dax’s pod experienced conditions much like the tower normally was with enough to keep them occupied, food and medical attention if they needed it. That was week one and they were tested on obedience, endurance and acclimation. At the end of that week, Dax had won obedience and acclimation. As punishment, everyone in the pod had to vote for someone who was not pulling their weight. Ventus was eliminated from Dax’s pod. Those eliminated from the competitions were executed. Dax’s method was humane and quiet, Jason performed a vivisection and Riki’s exploded. Young America bore witness to England’s vivisection and Legolas had to carry him away before he would watch it all.

For week two, they were tested on cooperation, physical health and mental health for the passive tests. For active tests, they were tested on treadmills, balance and eating gross foods. Dax’s pod won three times and lost once. This week, Legolas voted for the first and last time. His vote caused Tara Maclay to lose her life. At that point, he began to fade but held on enough that he could keep his promise to Tara that Dax would win the competition. spoiler: Dax lost and Riki won in the end.

Week three gave them all a simple passive endurance test and the people in Dax’s pod got nothing but water and nutrition bars to eat. His pod was nothing but a plain white room. When Majora tried to lighten the mood in the pod, Legolas joined in. Little else of note happened that week except at the end when Ruana announced that Riki had won the entire competition and Jason had been disqualified for mistreating the people in his pod. No one was eliminated that week.

The final week, Legolas did absolutely nothing that except sit against one of the far walls so that other people in the pod knew where it was and comforted Zelda. He didn’t eat. Once the event had ended and everyone was returned to the tower, Legolas remained in his room until eventually dying except the send a message to Gimli and Gandalf that he was returned. Unfortunately his death occurred in the company of Zelda, Gandalf and Gimli.

Then he met Jack Sparrow. And never in his life has he ever found a Man to be so thick-headed as a dwarf and who insisted on calling him Will, French and thought he was wearing a particularly fake looking wig. And that Legolas was married to Elizabeth. Thankfully, the day was improved by the arrival of Haldir who had come straight from the Battle of the Hornburg. The arrival of Haldir from that time had only cemented Legolas’ belief that the administrators were lying and that they were prisoners.

A party followed the return of everyone from the Pods and blind dates happened. Legolas ended up with Gimli as his blind date. It was this party that his position as Mirkwood’s Prince was revealed to Zelda. Much of his free time following that was spent hunting until the end of July when Xehanort started toying with dreams. As far as he was aware though, he was simply dreaming and his unconscious mind brought in the likenesses of others in the tower. Until later on, Ventus made a comment about Legolas’ dreams.

Following that, Legolas had a pair a twin knives crafted for Zelda by Doc Brown. Haldir took this as invitation to tease the prince about having feelings for Zelda and commented that they were well-suited to each other. This only lead to Legolas hunting down and attempting to beat the crap out of the march warden.

For what fun this was, this was the month that a giant space flying whale attacked the tower and exploded, leaving more monsters like those in the tower to attack residents. The different being that these were much larger and stronger. Legolas put all of his effort into assisting with the evacuation of residents to the lower and safer levels of the tower. During which, Legolas was attacked and his leg broken. And it wasn’t long after his leg finally healed that yet more trouble descended on the tower as a strange fog filled multiple floors and created Shadows of a great many people. His closest CR that was affected was Gandalf, Zelda, Fem!Link and Haldir.

Two weeks following, Jason swapped the bodies of residents and Legolas ended up spending several days in Gandalf’s body. The longer he spent in the wizards body, Gandalf’s memories would begin to seep into his mind until he would have difficulty recalling whether he was Legolas or Gandalf. It was thanks to Dax, sneakily releasing information regarding how it was done, that everybody affected was returned to their bodies. And thus Legolas and Gandalf narrowly avoided death. This was August.

Fast forward to October, nothing interesting happened to him in September except meeting Data, Idrial and Azula and going to another party. It was Halloween! Yay! And a Ruana month! Boo! Which meant a game and this game included forcing residents into Halloween costumes. Legolas was dressed as his father, the Elvenking. The game was that everyone had to collect a certain amount of candy by a certain time or their costume would grow tighter and tighter until it killed them. The further in the month that they got, the less candy they would find until the residents had to resort to stealing fro one another to survive. Legolas was one of the survivors after the game ended and his prize was his costume!

It was right after the Halloween game ended that the graveyard appeared in the tower. Each person that had left the tower had a grave there. By that point, there was a grave for Aragorn, Boromir, Faramir and Gimli. Gimli’s loss he took the hardest and attempted to dig up his grave in denial. Haldir intervened and drew him away from the graveyard floor.

Cue mindfuckery when Frodo arrives from a spaceship and so does Legolas! The two Legolas’ meet, it’s confusing and leads to mistaken identities. This was also around the time that Legolas discovered that Haldir’s hands had been injured by one of the people that had died in costume. He forced Haldir to see Gandalf and get his hands treated before he lost them. And if that didn’t work, Legolas was going to beg one of the administrators to heal Haldir at whatever cost they could take from Legolas.

December left him with only a minor mishap including an Uruk, almost losing his head and discovering that shorter hair does not suck so much as he thought. And a Christmas party that left him with gifts of a bottle of wine and a new book. Two weeks after the party, a council convened to decide what actions were within their power to take to lessen the burden of the One Ring on Frodo.

And a week after that, the minds of several people in the tower were altered to think they had spent more time in the tower than they actually had. Legolas and Haldir were mentally altered to think that a thousand years had passed. In that time, Legolas had become somewhat cynical and defensive of those closest to him. He didn’t trust anyone that he didn’t know and kept a wary eye on those that his own friends thought were trustworthy. By that time, he had also disposed of any royal bearing he had previously held, no longer fought with a bow and had become less merciful in his combat style. He had become very much like Thranduil in that time. When he was finally himself again, he gave it as little thought as he could, determined to remain as much alike himself as he could.

In February, Ruana decided to play a game again. This time, people were brought from Hinoto-Ri and were a curiosity for those in the tower since they didn’t have collars like the rest of them and would die if they left a specific floor before Ruana had to tower prepared for them. Among her games with everyone was Little Finger. A game in which those affected were put into a deep sleep and had to find the missing fingers of an old woman. When all the fingers were found, it started again but with one less finger to find. Legolas was among the losers and he died for a third time.

Following that, he was one of the few who had found the elevators opened and traveled down to the administrative levels. The group then split into four groups for each tunnel to investigate as much as they could. Legolas was grouped with Sephiroth and Riku and the three of them ended up investigating Riki’s room which had hundred of screens and none of them understandable. Riku attempted to use his Keyblade to unlock one and it started getting difficult for them. It wasn’t until Sephiroth punched one of the screens that the floor disappeared from beneath them and they fell. From there, the center of gravity kept shifting and threw them all about the room until the security system started the lasers. Legolas wasn’t able to avoid them like Riku and Sephiroth could and had his arm torn apart as a result. Once they could return to the Hub, Legolas returned to the tower proper and sought out Haldir and Gandalf. He and the others had spent two days down there. He had them kill him since he knew that he would lose his arm otherwise and become more of a burden on others than anything.

It was after he returned that he, along with almost every resident of the tower, witnessed the vide recording of Dax and Ruana talking. And it resulted in Ruana killing and eating Dax. And unlike the residents of the tower who had been saved, the administrators couldn’t come back to life. And thus, the only administrator that had genuinely cared about and actively tried to protect the residents, was gone.

In April, Samwise Gamgee and Thorin Oakenshield arrived in the tower. At this point, he was still as lighthearted as he could be regardless of all that he’d endured until then. Already though, it was clear that the tower had worn on him in a way that living in Mirkwood and fighting in the War of the Ring hadn’t.

And as joyful a reunion it should have been (between Legolas and Sam) it wasn’t. Like others, Legolas was kidnapped by Retrieval Units in April and disappeared for several days and when he returned, he had been brainwashed to think that he was a retrieval unit as well, one that would punish anyone that he thought was misbehaving. Sometimes it seemed like everyone misbehaved. And those that misbehaved were punished by being killed. His skull had been cut open and a chip that encouraged him to react more aggressively had been implanted by Jason as well as bending his spine at a painful angle and extending his lower canines. In order to accommodate his lower canines, his jaw had been dislocated. Like the others, he was prone to malfunctions and when he malfunctioned, he fed on the despair of those around him and gained strength from it.

After that, he hadn’t bounced back as he previously had. Legolas felt himself weaker and less in control of himself than others that he could be so easily manipulated. Now, his determination to fight and kill the administrators had intensified enough that he wasn’t thinking of them as people anymore. So he didn’t object to the idea of killing them if the opportunity should event present itself.

One of his latest acts has been to write a book on what everyone in the tower misses most about home. During the month of May though, rumors were suddenly being written on the walls and to see it meant you would automatically believe it. Even if you knew the concept was completely ridiculous. Legolas attempted to avoid some damage by changing one of the more awful rumors so the words: “The cafeteria has lembas and dorwinion wine.” carved in the outside of his lower right arm. It’s still scabbed up, healing and will scar.

Character Abilities:

“He was tall as a young tree, lithe, immensely strong, able swiftly to draw a great war-bow and shoot down a Nazgûl, endowed with the tremendous vitality of Elvish bodies, so hard and resistant to hurt that he went only in light shoes over rock or through snow, the most tireless of the Fellowship.” - J.R.R. Tolkien on Legolas in ‘The Book of Lost Tales, Part Two’.

Like all elves, he can see farther and more clearly than humans, can hear things more clearly and from farther away than humans and is far stronger than them. His senses are much sharper than that of other races. He’s light on his feet, much more quiet than hobbits are when they want to be quiet so that’s saying something. And when I say he’s light on his feet? I mean that he can walk ON TOP of snow. Without leaving foot prints. Not only that, but he can wear light clothes and thin leather boots and the cold won’t bother him. Like… at all. So he’s resistant to most, if not all, climates.

Elves require little to no sleep at all, that they rest their minds in waking dreams or look upon beautiful things, such as nature, in order to rest themselves. If it’s pretty and he looks at it for a long period of time? WOO! THAT WAS A GREAT REST. And he’s immortal, live to the end of the world if someone doesn’t jab him through the chest kind of immortal. He’s had that happen too, it wasn’t pleasant. Add to that, he will be un-aging, a trait all elves have when they reach maturity and can’t get sick. Ever.

And among his kin, there is the ability to cause sleep to take hold of those around them. Though Legolas never shows any type of use of these abilities, it can be assumed that he was taught how to do so since he’s a well-trained warrior in Mirkwood and son of the king. Those affected seem to have recollection of events that have happened around them (Bombur and the elven parties) and seem to long to return to that sleep when they finally awaken.

Okay so, he can also make things like hithlain rope which burns evil. Gollum freaked the hell out when Sam tied him with hithlain. It’s extremely light, flexible and soft to the touch. And, as other elves, he can understand animals and nature in a way that other races are incapable. For example, he knows that the stones of Hollin (Eregion) recall the elves while the nature and plant life do not.
