CHARACTER NAME: Legolas
SERIES: Lord of the Rings
CANON POINT: Fo. A. 120
LOSS: Memories of building a ship and that he and Gimli will sail West. For all he knows, he intends to remain in Middle Earth and succeed his father as King of Eryn Lasgalen.
ABOUT THE CHARACTER:
A bit of history, shortened to start.
Legolas was the Elvish member of the Fellowship of the Ring, sent to Rivendell by his father to report on Gollum’s escape and selected by Elrond or volunteered but he was also one of the most tireless of them all, always trying to keep their spirits up and helping to guide them by watching far ahead for any threats. His keen senses can in handy for hearing Wargs and Sarumans’ voice on Caradhras and he could sense the darkness that lurked in Moria.
His skill with a bow throughout the journey of the Fellowship is unmatched, unless by other elves encountered throughout the story. He’s even made a point to collect all of his arrows after a battle, though whether this was out of need or out of sentimental value is not described it can be assumed it’s out of need as Elves respect nature in its entirely and he would be loathe to needless carve into a tree to craft more arrows.
In Moria, Legolas’ archery skills were useful in keeping back orcs and goblins until the Balrog stirred and they fled. He helped keep the Fellowship moving on to Lothlorien after Gandalf’s fall. It was in Lothlorien, where they traveled shortly thereafter, that Legolas and Gimli became close friends and when leaving, Legolas was given the gift of a bow used by the Galadhrim, strung with the hair of an elf. It was after which that they lsot another member of the Fellowship, Boromir, who died to protect Merry and Pippin who were captured by Orcs while Frodo and Sam continued on their own.
A group of three left now, Legolas went with Aragorn and Gimli after the orcs to save the two kidnapped Hobbits before they were taken to Isengard and along the way they encountered the Riders of Rohan who gave them grim news that did not bode well for their friends. Though things seemed dark, they went on and learned of their safety while also meeting with Gandalf once more, who was now called “the White” instead of “the Grey”. They moved on to Edoras to confront King Théoden who was under the poisonous influence of Saruman. The betrayal of Grima Wormtongue was revealed because of it and the entire city was emptied and evacuated to Helm’s Deep.
Aragorn was lost on the way there but returned safely in time to fight with everyone in the Battle of the Hornburg, where Legolas and Gimli held a contest between the two of them as to who could kill the most orcs.
~It’s time for… A random bit of trivia! The Battle of the Hornburg in the film adaptations was mostly digitally rendered and because there were 10,000 orcs to go against those in Helm’s Deep. The armies that they programmed were given minor AI’s so that they would act accordingly. There was one regiment that actually turned and retreated.
And that’s been our Lord of the Rings trivia for today!~
Several days were spent fending off the army Saruman had sent after them and they lost a great many soldiers young, old, elvish and human, including Haldir. It was thanks to Gandalf arriving with the Riders of Rohan that they were finally able to grasp victory. The group proceeded to Isengard then and retrieved the Hobbits, Sarumans’ palantir and witnessed the death of the wizard as he fell from Orthanc.
Let’s move on, shall we? When it came time for Aragorn to walk the Paths of the Dead, there was no hesitation from Legolas in joining him, having no fear for the Dead Men, traitors though they had been in life. With the help of the ghostly warriors, they were able to clear out an invading army from Osgiliath.
~Boy this is getting long, isn’t it? And this was supposed to be a shortened version. Let’s skip ahead a bit, shall we? And then I can move onto personality and stuff because I really like involving history and personality but keeping them separate when it comes to these things.~
Legolas marched with Aragorn, Gimli and Gandalf to the Black Gates, drawing the Eye of Sauron to them so that Sam and Frodo could make it to Mount Doom to destroy the Ring. He fought along side his friends and had the pleasure of seeing the Dark Tower fall, Sauron’s destruction and great masses of land collapsing and taking the Dark Lords servants down with it. He flew on the backs of great Eagles with his companions to recover the Hobbits from the eruption mountain and took them safely to Rivendell to recover.
He stood with a crowd perhaps a month after, though no solid time frame was given, and watched as Aragorn was crowned king. He and a great many Elves assisted in the construction and repairs of the kingdom. In the Fourth Age after the death of Aragorn, Legolas built a ship for himself and Gimli so that they would sail West to the Undying Lands together.
Phew! That part is done, finally!
Personality time!
Like all elves, Legolas has an appreciation and understanding of nature that the other races of Middle Earth lack. Ear against the earth, he can hear the hoard of Orcs that stole away Merry and Pippin. While in Fangorn, he expresses how the forest makes him feel young once again and how he’d like to return one day.
He is loyal to his companions in the Fellowship, growing angry at Aragorn for worrying those that continued on with Rohan’s people to Helm’s Deep and even more so as he watched young boys being fitted for armor. This shows that he holds all life in high regards and loathes the pointless waste of life. He is kind to those around him and even forms a tight friendship with Gimli, a dwarf, an apparently exceedingly rare occurrence in Middle Earth. As old as he is, during the War of the Ring (which is about 2,932 years at that time), he had an egotistical habit of referring to those around him, in the fellowship, as children, with the exception of Gandalf who is about 51,000 years older than him.
Despite the dire times, Legolas showed an amount of cheerfulness that one normally wouldn’t express during times of war. This can either be attributed to elven sturdiness and long life, or it could be his way of coping with all the death around him. Often, during battles, he and Gimli challenge each other to see who can kill the most orcs. Legolas usually wins.
He is also brave, later joining Aragorn through the Path of the Dead without hesitation and with full knowledge that it was necessary. Not only brave but he is extremely faithful, and his tracking skills are not wasted when trying to rescue Merry and Pippin from the Orcs to Isengard.
Legolas isn’t as well traveled as the rest of his companions seem to be, due to the fact that elves typically remain in the woods they call home and even comments that Aragorn has traveled more and farther than he ever has. This could also be attributed to the fact that he is a prince, son to King Thranduil of the Sindarin elves and royalty usually has more restrictions placed on them.
Like all elves, he has an appreciation for all types of beauty and is moved when Gimli tells him about the Glittering Caves. He also appeared to appreciate the beauty of Lothlorien, despite the fact that the entire fellowship was currently mourning the loss of Gandalf and appears to be fascinated by Fangorn Forest later.
And finally, Legolas can hold his liquor with the best of them. In a drinking game against Gimli, Legolas drank over ten mugs/pints of ale and barely suffered from tingling fingers while Gimli passed out in a cross-eyed, drunken stupor.
ABILITIES:
“He was tall as a young tree, lithe, immensely strong, able swiftly to draw a great war-bow and shoot down a Nazgûl, endowed with the tremendous vitality of Elvish bodies, so hard and resistant to hurt that he went only in light shoes over rock or through snow, the most tireless of the Fellowship.” - J.R.R. Tokien on Legolas in ‘The Book of Lost Tales, Part Two’.
Sharpened senses: He can see farther and more clearly than humans, can hear things more clearly and from farther away than humans.
Sleepless: It’s said that Elves require little to no sleep at all, that they rest their minds in waking dreams or look upon beautiful things, such as nature, in order to rest themselves.
Telepathy: This works only when it comes to other elves.
Unbeatable archery skills (and Elvish trait)
Immortality (but can die from injuries or deep sorrow though)
Capable of creating artifacts such as hithlain (the Elvish rope that Frodo bound Gollum with, it burns evil).
THIRD-PERSON WRITING SAMPLE:
Bow in hand, the prince ran through the forest with three of his companions with a grin on his face. Though much of the threat the forest once held had diminished, it was still not entirely safe. Which was why Legolas was with a group of hunters and not alone. He was eager to begin hunting, eager to return home with his friends and relax.
“A bottle of Dorwinian to anyone who should best me in hunting this day!” Legolas called, climbing a tree as nimbly and any forest creature so that he would have the highest point. There was a cheer from below him as the others began to fan out to watch for an approaching animal. They only needed one, unwilling to decimate the forests population and that was why Legolas had decided to make a contest of it among them.
For hours among the trees and plant life they sat, never tiring and always watching for what would be their next meal until finally a splendid deer came into view, a fully grown male with plenty of muscle. Legolas drew an arrow back quickly, releasing it into the creature though it was not a fatal blow as another arrow flying by the deer startled it and it reacted instinctively. One of Legolas’ companions moved quickly with his blade to attempt to slay it and relieve is of its current suffering but it moved and left a long and ugly wound across the elfs chest.
“Hold!” Legolas jumped from the tree and moved to his fallen friend, letting the deer flee with his arrow in it’s flank. It could be recovered later, another would find it and it would leave a trail for them to follow later. Pulling his cloak from his shoulders, he wrapped it around the chest and wound of his companion and motioned for the remaining pair to lift him and carry him home. He took point, ensuring that nothing crossed their path and impeded them on their way and when they finally made it back to Thranduil’s Halls, Legolas motioned for several elves to take him and treat him.
“It seems our contest has no victor. Be well my friend and we may try again another day.” He said, leaning over him as he was taken away before leaving for his own rooms to rest and change into something more comfortable and appropriate for home. Rest came first though and perhaps a bath to clean the blood from his hands.
FIRST-PERSON JOURNAL SAMPLE:
[The handwriting that appears on the page is neat, practiced.]
Greetings to all who can read my words. I am Legolas Thranduilion of the Woodland Realm now called Eryn Lasgalen. I have been informed of these ‘losses’ though I know not what may have been taken from me just yet.
It must seem obvious already that I am new to Cair Paradisa. Any fair warnings that one might be able to give would be welcome. I would also appreciate one directing me to where I might collect a bow or at least a knife and wood that would make an acceptable bow. I am wary of being in an unfamiliar land without any method of defense.
[There’s probably something he’s forgetting but he’s covered the basics of what he needs.]
Ah, if any of my friends might be here, thought my luck be slim, I would be glad to hear of you.
OPTIONAL: N/A
INTENT: Don’t really have one just yet, aside from giving Paradisa another try.
